Interest in the water we consume has been increasing for several years. Not just for health and hygiene reasons given the growing awareness that the water we drink contains contaminants that can affect our health over time. It’s also due to a growing awareness of climate change and the devastation humans are wreaking on our ecosystem, particularly plastic pollution in our oceans, which is now recognized as a global crisis. Research on 4 continents found micro plastics in 83% of all tap water samples taken from hundreds of homes.

This situation is leading more and more families to consider using home water filters as an alternative to buying bottled water. These devices allow us to capture and eliminate harmful particles using various neutralizing agents such as activated carbon or UV light. Thanks to this growing interest in filtering water in our homes, hundreds of different models are on the market today, all with different filtration methods.

So, if you are also considering installing a water filter at home, the first thing you want to know is what the main types are and more importantly.

What is the difference between filtration and water purification?

The Difference Between Filtering and Purifying Of these two terms, purification seems to be the most misunderstood term, as the most common understanding when it comes to cleaning contaminants from the water we consume is to purify. To understand its importance, it is enough to know that water from natural sources (rivers, springs, etc.) is not 100% pure and contains elements inherent in the source itself, such as minerals, salts, organic matter, and others. With that in mind, the purification process aims to remove anything that might be “undesirable” or unhealthy from the water.

Most cleaning systems use activated carbon to absorb dirt particles. Carbon purifiers absorb the organic molecules present, while UV light purifiers also remove microorganisms. Other purification methods include the use of ion exchange resins to retain minerals or minerals and distillation.

On the other hand, the filtration method focuses on using a filter element or screen to remove solid particles from the water. The two most common filtration systems are sediment and membrane filters, which are often combined.

The main difference between these two “water purification” methods is that purification removes natural or added elements that are dissolved in the water or in the form of microscopic particles, while filtration only focus on solid sediment or contaminants. In today’s homes, these two methods are often combined to improve water quality.

Types of water filters

Reverse osmosis water filters:

This is a type of filter that does not require large investments and is one of the most widespread thanks to its ease of installation. It is usually placed under the sink so that the water that comes out of the pipes arrives already cleaned. In the kitchen faucet, where most of the water we drink is used.

Ultraviolet light filters:

This filtration system uses ultraviolet light to remove microbes and other particles present in the water. The water is purified by passing it through UV lamps, whose rays neutralize bacteria and make the water drinkable. They are not recommended as they do not remove solid particles.

Carbon filters:

This is the most recommended type of filter in homes because it removes bacteria, solid particles and other substances that can harm people’s health. The activated carbon initiates a very effective cleaning process that breaks down the particles that cause dirt in the water.

Ion exchange

It consists of the use of ionic resins in the form of spherical granules. Depending on the specific properties of each product, ion exchange filtration can be used to decalcify water, reduce salt levels or remove nitrates from water. It offers advantages that activated carbon filters alone cannot offer, which is why the two systems are often integrated.

Ceramic filters

The water jet passes through a channel lined with a porous ceramic material that eliminates microorganisms and suspended matter without the need for chemical products. They are not as effective as carbon or reverse osmosis filters, but they are a traditional filtration method that has proven to be very durable.

Why Need Water Filter for Home?

Water is one of the most important natural resources on our planet and its presence is essential to life. When it comes to drinking water, however, we do not always have a quality product at our disposal as its properties vary greatly from place to place. A water filter is an excellent solution to improve its properties, ensure hygiene and invest in a future without plastic packaging.

By installing a water filter at home, we can take care of our ecosystem and ensure that the water we consume is not harmful to our health. Also, by installing a water filter in our kitchen, we can save the space that we would have to spend on bottled water. Not to mention the hassle we save by not having to bring bottled water home.

In addition, water filters improve the quality (and therefore taste) of the water we consume. Although bottled water assures us of higher quality, the truth is that on many occasions we don’t know exactly what kind of treatment it has undergone. Therefore, when properly filtered, tap water is considered a better option.

We are increasingly aware of the quality of the water we consume and increasingly demanding of its composition. Health and hygiene have become a priority in our routine, and we pay more attention to pollutants that can affect our long-term health. Expression. In these circumstances, it is common to resort to bottled water in search of a safe product. But that is not the only alternative. Have you heard of filtered water?

Filtration and water purification are two interesting solutions for those who demand maximum health guarantees. Significant advances have been made in science and technology to obtain a product free of solid particles (filtered) and substances that, depending on their concentration, can pose a health risk (purified).

Although there are nuances between filtration and water purification, these terms are becoming increasingly close. Today, science is focused on obtaining high-quality drinking water through the use of different processes, sometimes combining different methods.
